Hang in there. I think the chat will become a useful tool within time, if people start habitually checking out the chat while logging in (if they WANT to chat of course)..
Maybe it's too early to expect to have an active chat, this is still a very small forum.

I check on occasion, but then I leave it in the background and forget to see if anyone is there.
I think there is something called a 'shout out' that you could put right underneath the banner, would let us basically chat, but really it is just shuttling the messages to a database and reposting them realtime at the top. It would have to be a phpBB plug-in to tie into the same registration acct... Dunno. Just a suggestion. It would be viewable by all, that might be a bit too public.
Maybe one of the flash ones would do as a sidebar or popup window link at top? I haven't looked into this thoroughly, but I could if you wanted.
(Be on the lookout for Turkish hackers. Plugins was how they got into my business.)
